That's what 'AddCharset' is for, no?
You mean the Apache directive? Never used it... It may work. Requires .htaccess files to work which also doesn't seem to be the case in 99% of all cases. And it surely won't work on IIS setups, which some are using.
IIS needs fixing anyway in order to protect attached files, for instance, so this would be yet another one.  I use the directive regularly because of IEs inability to correctly detect charsets...
True, as long as you don't have other plug-ins that require PHP-generated files.
Well, i could iterate through the plug-ins forum if this is the only problem...

BTW, a BOM won't help?  Never tried it and the browsers I regularly use are too clever in detecting charsets...

Removed the .php extension, removed PHP code, resaved with BOM, updated the common function, tested with Firefox - all fine. Tested with Opera - no problem either.

Tested with IE - no alternative characters were suggested. Tested on the live forum - no special characters either. Seems broken in IE anyway. To be honest, right now I'm too lazy to track down the problem. Maybe when IE8 is out (or I'm back in my VM with IE8), featuring all its "latest and greatest" development tools.

So, it seems to work fine without .php and with BOM. We can leave it like this if nobody screams... There should be another release soon, along with a few other fixes and changes.
