Subject: [Language] French translation in prgress
I'm making a French localization, at time of writing i have completed 25% (approx.).

Subject: How much is complete ?
Just wanted to know where was the translation process ?
It's been quite a while...

As I said I can help :-)

If this has been dropped, I am willing to take over the translation if necessary. If an admin or moderator can pass on files of the previous work, this could help.

I have a project coming for which I'll use UNB thus I'll be able to complete this very fast :-)

You may be interested in the new files of version 1.6 that I will release in a couple of days. They're organised differently and so it would be some work to convert them from an older version anyway.

Ok thanks a lot Yves, eager to get 1.6 and start working from the fresh release :-)

I didn't check how much works needs done, but from my experience as a head of translation for textpattern, aroundme and bitweaver, this could go pretty fast :-)

Once I am done, I'll announce the availability of the french translation on webmaster-hub, the biggest webmaster's community in France. I hope I'll attract french webmasters to this great app you have developped :-)

From what I've done updating the English files from my German ones by now, I'd say it takes about 2 days to translate the entire board, given you have good language skills and are familiar with the board.

I have downloaded the latest dev revision and started the french translation :-)

One thing I have noted is the use of
<b> and </b>
tags, which I replaced by their XHTML equivalent
<strong> and </strong>

Just thought I would let you know so others can comply with standards :-)
I'll keep you posted on the translation progresses !

Hmmm, I have a little problem with the escape (i.e " \ ") sign that I do need for french because of the "appostrophe" ( i.e " ' ").

When I type "qu\'aux" for example, insted of getting a normal display : qu'aux => I get this : qu\ aux
How come ?

Edit : never mind I was at fault there, it's fixed


Other thing, I have to replace é, è and à by their html entities which should not be needed with utf-8, does it ?

As far as I know, all source files are encoded with iso-8859-1, even if the postings are encoded with utf-8. So you have to replace all characters not included in that codemap with the html entities.

Once again I try to edit my post (rather than adding a new one...) and I get an "access denied".. what was that ?

Just to say that common.php is done :-)
I guess I'll be done fast, maybe even tonight, then hopefully I'll find some french people to help me debunk the translation !

Fyi, I have used the correct typographical apostrophes and quotation characters this time. It's not ' and " but ‚ ‘ ’ „ “ and ”. You should try to find the correct character for this in French. It's been a while but afair, quotation characters are « and » for you. Single-quotes and apostroph, I don't know. You can use your operating system's character map application or keyboard shortcuts to enter these characters.

All language files are UTF-8-encoded. There's a big warning (ok, not so big) at the top of each file that informs you about this. Please do not use any HTML entities in translation files. This is not HTML, this is an abstract translation of text. It will be used in different media like e-mail where no HTML entities are supported. And yes, UTF-8 is there exactly to replace those entities. This is Unicode. :)

All source code files are encoded in iso-8859-1 (aka Latin1), correct. Except the new unicodetable-bla-js file that contains the special characters for the post editor. But translation files are encoded in UTF-8.

As I said, this problem was not from your file but it was my mistake, that's why I strike through what I wrote...

Oops I used HTML entities in my first draft, because it wouldn't work otherwise, and it was the way it worked for other CMS I contributed to... but now that you mention it I think it's because I am doing the translation local and EasyPHP has Apache default to IS08859-1. I'll fix this. Thanks for the info.

I mentioned the thing with the localised quotation marks because those need not be quoted specially in PHP. You need to put a backslash before ' or " at some places, but not before the other ones.

Here's some parts from the old website's FAQ section about translation files, which seems to have been lost right now...:
All files are normally UTF-8 encoded, but don’t have a byte-order marker (BOM) because PHP has some problems with it.

For problems with that BOM, see the other sections in the FAQ and Troubleshooting page in the documentation.

I think I will have something complete today, after that I'll check the translation holds up "in context" and do some correction, check typos and orthograph. Then how should I proceed ? Send it to you Yves to make it available for download ?
