Subject: Alpha Image Loader
Hello,

I'm trying to get some nice background transparance with IE6 on the forum, but there is just no way..
I tried the javascript approach with "nbCorrectPNGforIE", but where and how is "alphaPNGfiles " to be defined ?

I manipulated the css in every possible way, but it just won't work. Even a single simple div on top of it remains transparent.

Is there a lock, or is the css parsed in a way that alphaimageloader just won't work ?

Been on that whole day, very frustrating..

Thanks anyway, i really UNB, but my IE6 buddy's, well.. less..

IE6 cannot handle PNG alpha channel transparency the standard (easy) way. There's nothing you can do about it. There are several approaches to do that with behaviours (which I have no idea of) and JavaScript, which the one I provide is one of.

alphaPNGfiles is an array that's defined with the design to specify what files should be handled that way. This most notably doesn't include all smileys because of another major bug in IE6 (you cannot click the smileys anymore then). I'm not sure how well this is implemented in UNB 1.6 since I almost droppen support for that hack. You might take a look into 1.5.3 to find out more.

I'm not aware of any locking mechanism to prevent IE from displaying the page correctly. There's absolutely no need to do that. IE does it itself very well already.

Frustrated so much with Internet Exploder? Time to use a real browser that can handle these elementary features for years now.

I know al that, and i use firefox since the earliest betas.. The users are the problem, i keep on prosyliting for mozilla, but some just stick with IE.. It's already hard to introduce UNB as a new forum (they're switching).

I tried to include the filter:alphaimageloader in the css in every possible way, but in UNB it just doesn't work.. I even attached a non-php-parsed css, but no.

I guess it's just another bug.. if I find a work-around, I'll let it know. 8-(

Nice work  ;-)

You should know that I know of no solution to make IE6 display alpha-transparency PNG images as background images correctly. All the hacks and CSS filter things only work for <img>-style images, so inline images.

I must say that I agree on that score. In our own website we stick to UNB 1.5.3 simply because it looks OK in IE, and because most of our users -- and practically all of our guests -- use, and apparently continue to use, Internet Explorer (we run a service for school- and educationally oriented audiences). There is of course nothing we can do to change that. And since UNB 1.6 looks, well, quite "unprofessional" viewed with the IE browser, we hesitate to upgrade. We certainly do not want to be considered unprofessional by users and/or guests because they judge our level of professionality by the experience they get from visiting our webforum -- notwithstanding their total lack of insight into the technical reasons for this experience.

This, in my view, is the only practical drawback using UNB in a production environment. Apart from this, UNB is -- as is often pointed out in this forum -- a wonderful piece of software.

Well, if anybody has fun in creating an IE6 compatible design, I'd be happy to include it here. :) Once IE7 is out, this should be way better again. Not perfect, but better.

I'm running a very unprofessional site, and if anyone says "I can't view your site in IE!!!" I'll say "Get outta my site."

That's my solution for people who insist on using such horrible software. :)

Quite. I wish I too could afford such technophile arrogance. But regrettably I can't. :-)

Okay, GIF supports transparency. But what this topic probably was about (didn't read the now obsolete years old posts) was technically "translucency", i.e. partial (like half or 30%) transparency of certain areas in the image. This definitely does not work with GIF. But today every major browser supports PNG with alpha-channel transparency so this thread really is obsolete.
