BTW, the .htaccess approach is prone to break: I had to change all *.css.php files because they did not work any more (instead, they have been served in source format as "application/x-php5" or so)...

That means that UNB doesn't work out of the box at PHP5?

The difference between us is that you don't care but I do.
No, we just have a different understanding of  "care".  Yours has a bit of 'Windows'-style: no security and hell might break loose, but keep it easy for the user.  I prefer the less simple "better safe than sorry" approach (which results in obviously demanded gimmicks)...

It does work(of course)! There might be some issues in broken (cheap) server environments, as usal.

PHP4 is dead, officially.  So, who cares?  Me wouldn't mind to not support broken software with a bad security record...

But you experienced it! Wasn't on your server?
I have to upgrade to PHP5 to enjoy the new Jabber notification library that Yves is testing, but now you scare me...

It least not to break PHP4 compatibility before the jump to UNB2.
UNB2 is–despite the name–*not* an update to UNB1.  For those who need PHP4 there is 1.6.4.  For those who need current features there is "> 1.6.4"...

Mea culpa.
The UNB2 announcement is not in English and I didn't read it.

Exactly.  So? – smooth transitions (no care), demanded features (care)

Well, I did not want to use .php5 so I used an apache directive to enforce PHP5.  This somehow broke double extensions like .css.php (and the corresponding provider does not care).  A forum.php5 (without known problems) should be sufficient to use the new Jabber notification.

Okay, some "official" annotations again. You're discussing thing too fast for me. ;)

UNB2, a.k.a. UNB Components, is a rewrite of a web forum software with totally different design goals. It is no update to UNB1 and UNB1 will still be maintained. You could say it's a different product.

And right, I didn't think of the PHP5 requirement of xmpphp. I'll have to consider this. But it will definitely require PHP5 to work. So I'll probably continue to ship the current (old) jabber.lib.php for those users. PHP4 just doesn't allow connecting to all Jabber servers then.

UNB1 works perfectly on PHP5. This board here is running on PHP5 for a very long time already. UNB1 has some switches built-in that sort out the differences in OO behaviour between PHP 4 and 5. Officially, UNB1 runs from PHP 4.1 up to the latest PHP5. Although nobody tests PHP4 anymore... So should there be any problems, I'm depending on your bug reports.

I'm experiencing a rare corner case where I'd imagine that no one else will ever see this (simple solution: change/remove the first dot in *.css.php)...
