Subject: auto ban ip settings

lately I have problems with bots that make many requests. My assumption is that this are bots which try to exploit security holes in dynamic web pages. I want to auto ban this IP addresses but want to be sure that this does not block search bots. I wanna get rid only of the "bad bots". Has anybody a good suggestion for the auto-ban settings? I set it to 15 requets in 60 seconds now.

Most of the time when I look up the IPs that assault my server they're from search engines. Korea's Naver is the worst, but Google and Microsoft and several others, including some University/Research engines, also clog up the logs.

On my board i have:

many bots trying to register accounts

many hits to the user account pages, no idea why

many bots executing search queries

You could deny access to bots for register and search pages if you can identify their user-agent string, using a .htaccess file. It gets more difficult if they don't send one or if they send too many different ones.
