And what happend to the Mod?
I'm really interested and my User expect it!

Please make such a Mod, just a Send-A-Shot-Message would be OKAY!!

But I need it so please develop it!!

mfg Pho3nix

Due to a lot of homework, and my wife being hospitalized short term, I haven't done too much with the mod just yet.  I really like this idea that Yves has, and I don't know if such a mod would still be necessary if he decides to implement this.

What do you all think?  It sounds like this solution really takes away the need for a set of private boxes that look like every other discussion board.

Yes, it probably replaces the original idea of the extra application PM. This is why I contacted you about this again.

But I think you underestimate current ACL possibilities. The way of group chatting I described here is more thought for an ad-hoc small group chat. If a, say, theacher is planning to address a constant defined set of people for a longer time, I'd really recommend to use user groups and normal access rights to forums. This way you'd have a real discussion area with multiple threads for those users.

OK, I have added private/group messaging to the roadmap recently. It is currently scheduled for version 1.7, which may or may not be released in 2005. Sorry for this long-term planning, but I try to stay realistic and will have less time in the next months than in the last time.

And strobe, I'm still waiting for your PM plugin (if u remember)...

Coz e-mail feature on my forums causes my mailbox flooded with "undeliverable mails" as a result of fake e-mail addresses.. sigh!

Spaceman, I sort of put that on hold because Yves had a good idea that he wanted to use to implement it.  If you guys think there is still a need for a 'traditional' system, I could probably still do it - but it seems that having two systems would be overboard.

Let me know - I did start on it, I just stopped after Yves came up with a more unique solution.

Has it been developed yet? Just to let you know that the e-mail system that comes with this forum does not work out completely. Because either they (forum members) entered the wrong e-mail, or their mailbox is currently full. So when they e-mailed me via the forum, I can't reach them back! :( I really looking for a mod for integrated PM system to replace the existing e-mail system. Thanks a zillion!! :-)

P/s: Plz make it work for version 1.5.1 because I'm currently still running that version on my site ;)

Hi spaceman,

no it hasn't been started yet, and it's currently scheduled for version 1.7, which might still change a little. I don't have much time now and can continue work on the forum in April.

But one thing is sure: It will definitely not work with any older UNB version than the one that first features it. It's not a little mod, it's an architectural change at the core level which cannot be transferred to an older code base. That's hat makes up progress.

Concerning full mailboxes and invalid mail addresses: When someone is not even able to keep their mailbox in an operable state or enter the address without mistakes, they mustn't wonder if I delete their account if I can't reach them. That's hard but true.

Maybe you're right. But he is one of the "essential" members of my forum and I don't think he purposely entered a wrong e-mail. Anyway I can still remember I got lots of private messages in my previous forums (not BlackBoard/UNB). So I guess PM is indispensable on some forums, don't you think so?

For example I can get to you immediately on matters regarding this forum software if you PMed me, instead if you e-mailed me, I can't reply you unless I check my mail while I'm browsing your forum at the same time :)

Well, we had this discussion before iirc. It's the other way round for most users afaict. I have my mail client auto-checking every some minutes, on whatever PC I am, but I'm not constantly surfing all forums all the time, I got some other things to do, too. If I get no PM notification by mail, it could take some days or weeks before I read that message. And I personally don't see an urgent need for a PM system, I never needed one. E-mailing was sufficient in all cases by now and I only PMed someone if the board didn't allow e-mailing. ;) Imagine a user does read his PMs rarely and his quota is reached, so you couldn't send him PMs neither. If someone doesn't want to be reached by mail or whatever equivalent technology, you can do nothing about it. If he just doesn't know how to handle it, you might help him.

Private/group messaging will definitely come for UNB, but it could come faster if someone has by chance a patch for it lying around. :D

Hi folks,

PMs are very much used in my forum, that is currently running with phpbb, so I'm also very interesseted in this enhancement of UNB to be able to jump on that great board software.
In my case a quota and the ability to attach files even to private messages is wanted and useful by the users. My idea for deleting is the following:
Every 'member' of the private/group message can push a button 'delete thread', if they are no longer interested in the thread. Intern there is a 'deleted' flag for every user/PM. If all flags are set, the message gets really deleted including all attachments. Until the message is really deleted every user can find it in a 'Deleted PM/GM' Section and maybe 'undelete' if there are additional posts from a different member that become interessting again.

Greetings, Franz

Hello Franz,

that idea about deleting sounds interesting. But instead of deleting things, why not use the concept of hiding threads as this is already in? In the context of private messages, this could be renamed to "delete" but the concept behind would still be hiding threads. They can be displayed once again with the advanced option "show hidden topics".

The main tool I want to have is the quota or something else to prevent users from using my server as storage server. On the other side it should be possible to append files to a message.
One scenario could be a small group that want to create a word document together, everyone can upload, edit und download it. If they finished their work there should be a motivation to delete these things from the server.
So the concept is different from just hiding threads.

Hmm, sounds to me as very different..
As for the the 'working together on a document', you could use a wiki for that purpose, or the wiki plugin that is suggested for UNB.

I like the idea of having private messaging system as a forum rather than the conventional pm method. So, what is it's current status? I would like to see it implemented soon, this is kind of a must have feature for me.

Regards
