Subject: Version 1.5.2
I have just released the 1.5.2 stable version of BlackBoard. This time it is derived from the latest development code which means that almost every file may have changed.

From this version on, you can make all your design changes in custom design files that are not overwritten or changed on an update. Example files are provided in the distribution archive. See the documentation for details.

I have fixed a whole lot of bugs including some serious security problems. Upgrade to this version is greatly recommended as it massively extends the basic security given with patch 1.5.1-h.

Furthermore, this version features the final RSS feed implementation and is almost completely XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant. (Almost means around 99%.) A detailed list of changes can be viewed in the change log.

The download page provides the download archives in different formats.

Deutsche Version:

Great news.  Looks like it was worth my time to wait for this version where the design is abstracted.  :)

Subject: Version checking problems...
I've just downloaded and installed 1.5.2-c as latest "stable" version of BB. But version checking says there's a new version and redirects me to download the same file.

Also, this installation is for a client that won't be updating BB every time an update is availalbe, so it would be nice to be able to disable version checking.

Just patching would be ok for now, but I really think this feature needs to be refined (a manual version check would be nice when you have disabled automatic version checking).

Keep up the good work!

good idea to make the version check somemotre intelligent.
you could for instance say, i only want the x in:
every new full version: x.y.y
or y.x.y
or y.y.x
or even every bug fix like y.y.y-x

if you could set that in the AP, would be nice!

Update warning for the latest stable version? Hm, I'll have to check that. It works fine for my devel versions.

For now, you can disable version checking in the config file (where most of the new settings go) under 'enable_versioncheck'. Just set it to 0 and it won't bug you anymore. I'm planning to implement an "Ignore this version" link so that it will come back with the next update.

I won't do something like the above because this notification is mainly for critical updates. What if I release a patch for some serious bug and I want as many people as possible to see it? If everyone just says "give me the next stable", this doesn't help at all and they could also turn it off entirely. This is also why I don't bump out a "patch" for any new issue we find but only for the more serious ones and then I try to collect them for some time if minor things get in.

And all the new features I recently added to the config file will be in the AdminCP with its next redesign. Currently, it would be too much to get it into the current structure...

Yves, thanks for your reply!

I agree with you, but I'd like to point out that with version checking disabled the only way I can be updated with news about BB is by subscribing to the support board and turn on e-mail notification on the news and announcements forum (I've found this out today!).

What about a plain and simple newsletter?
I guess you could easily link your postings to N&A forums to a newsletter engine.

BTW, I've started a new thread about BB designs in Q&A Forums. Just guessed you'de like to check it out.

Sorry, I didn't mean there is "no other way" to be updated, I meant there is no other way "for me" since I'm not used to RSS feeds or other ways that do not involve the use of plain and simple e-mail.

I probably just need to update my brain to a more recent version. :-p

It must work. Setting this option to 0 completely disables the version check code. Please make sure you changed the config option correctly.

Thanks for your reply!
I finally managed to solve this problem.

Version checking saves data about the last version it found, so I had to remove those info from the conf file to completely disable it.

*umpf* Sorry, it wasn't completely disabled... :-/ Now there will be no more warning if the function is disabled, even if the board knows there is something newer.
