I feel my self-made algorithm failing again... So what would you think about "The Unclassified Newsboard" (or "The Unclassified Discussion Board")? Seems kinda obvious regarding the domain name, and somehow, the reason to call my private website 'unclassified' (I think it was mainly because I couldn't find another name nor a clear categorisation, and by the other meaning of the word, it is 'public', not 'classified' = restricted access) also applies a bit to this software. :rolleyes:

I'm wondering how they could successfully buy the word "Blackboard" for themselves, but hey, that's USA* patents! (cf so-called software patents... grr) Then of course, I will not risk getting this in court. They're probably too big.

*) Remember? The land of infinite possibilities. ;)

BlackBoard ís working somekind of online (educational) discussion software, what ofcourse has something to do with a discussion board.

on the other hand, i don't think they are making a problem because of the patent of blackboard, because that would apply to the software, than they would also took phpbb and others to court.
i think it's more about trademarks, about the name blackboard, and i have nothing against trademarks. they are the same in the whole world and are good for protecting your name, for instance the new name this piece of software :)

Off Topic:
OK, mixed up patents and trademarks a little, but I also do have something against trademarks like those that are common words that could also stand for many other things, like in this case "Blackboard". I have found quite some useful names but they were all registered by some company. There will be the day when "Bulletin Board Software" will be a trademark and all people like me will get into trouble finding any name for a simple piece of software. But this is the wrong place for all that,
I'm quite happy with the new name I mentioned above, and if noone has reasonable objection, this will be it from the next board version on.

I think 'The Unclassified Newsboard' is too long. Also it doesn't get over the earlier complaint about blackboard that it is not easily reached by search engines.

Going back to Latin, sine ordo is literally 'without class'. How about 'sinordo' - different, not googled, domain available...

Or 'genusbb' - genus means type or class so this is the opposite of unclassifed really, but it is also quite catchy and ungoogled.

Beta? Such like 'bugs testing phase'?

I have finished with Latin and Greek – with no results. I'm running out of ideas with that.

laserlight: Equinox is already multiply registered. That's why I removed it from my list recently.

The Unclassified Discussion Board could be abbreviated with something like udboard. And why is it hard to find in Google? It is already found today as first hit (with "unclassified newsboard"). Or what about "unclassified webforum"? And the domain availability is currently no criterium, because I see no reason to pay for an extra domain when I can have so beautiful ;) subdomains here... (Not every single product needs its own domain.)

Not possible, since the term would be too generic.

The Unclassified Discussion Board could be abbreviated with something like udboard.
That would be good.

Deeboo? or (dibo/DiBo)

It sounds like a dogname, but it stands voor DB (discussion board).

udboard
Sounds strange... (the short 'ud' with the longer 'board').

TUB -> the Unclassified Board
Discussion Board Without a Name -> diBWaN ;-)

Ah, Deeboo... for me it's more an African name...

But why is a short+long name strange? vBulletin i.e. is also one letter + a word. Maybe we could also say "udb" or "unb" or "uwb" (unclassified web board) (also: ultra wide band technology) or "uwf" (~ web forum)...

Good point. 'unclassified forum' works ok too - although it seems to prefer the German page  :-)

The reason I like a short distinctive name is mainly for my own programming convenience rather than for end users, and 'unclassifed' is an awkward word from this point of view...
// class_unclass.php
// class declaration for interface to unclassified forum
class class_unclass {
...
}

$unclass =& new class_unclass;
:wand:

So udboard (further compressed to udb as a prefix?) works well here. So does unForum or uForum (although that looks like it is trying to be a vBulletin clone or appeal to extra-terrestrials as UFOrum).

All names that I've seen in here are sooooo open-source-geek-only-application-like... I'm surprised no one proposed something like phpMyXXX or phpBBXXX or phpXXX... :-O
Please, try to be a little more... creative!... :cheesy:
If you want to keep the BB-thing in the name, think of something unusual... like

BBanana - Fresh and tasty like the fruit, and recalls former BlackBoard name.
Or...

BigBoard - should make you think of "the next big thind" in the web board scenario...
Or...

BlackBird  - nice try to keep the old name without braking trademarks...
Or...

BoardInn // InnBoard - Innovative Board, and something that recalls a receiving, comfortable and familiar place (inn).

I guess we could think of more...
How do you feel about those names?

What about some variety of "pixel board"? It's small, it's not widely spread, it's designed very precisely :-D...
