Subject: About version 1.6...
Hi folks,

as you may know, I'm still working on the HTML templates integration these days. This is technically completed to about 80% now. I'm also changing the overall board design in this step, mostly since I didn't really want to copy the previous thread view's CSS class soup into the new, tidied and better structured design definition. And so I'm going to change the forums and threads lists, too, which I haven't started with yet. So the new design ideas are worked in to about 30%. And let's not forget the re-structured user+admin control panel. Some unnecessary design options will be removed, and finally, you'll see all new board configuration options in a web interface again. :)

I still believe I can finish that for August, although it may be late August, instead of middle.

But the most significant change for today is that I have decided to change the version numbering (again, yes). I have chatted with some people and explained them what I'm doing there and some of them asked me why I call this a "minor release". And they're right. First I thought, it's only HTML templates, no change to see for the end user, so it's a minor thing. But as there'll be a new design, too, now, there will be a significant change to the end user and this is not a minor thing anymore.

In short: we didn't change the course, but are heading towards UNB version 1.6 now.

Be curious about some interesting new things, it should be easier to customise the board's design and alter the code with a better documentation. More details will be published with UNB 1.6-rc1. :)

Let me express my great anticipation too. I have used YaBB for some years now, and it is ok, but it's a bit buggy at times. UNB seems much faster, more sensible in layout and functioning - and I hope it is also very reliable. And I really like that it is standards compliant!

Good to know you're happy with what I do all day... :)
But I need to disappoint you a little, concerning my scheduled release date. There have been some unexpected events the last few days that took a lot of my time. I'm still over it, currently I'm finalising the new templates design, but it seems I can't do that for August still. I'm not sure about when it's ready, but a first RC should be available in September. I hope you like it, maybe I'll post some screenshots meanwhile. ;)

OK, let's begin with that picture series. Today, there's the new post layout. It was designed to be kind of minimalistic yet informative. At first, only the information you need is displayed, but more data can be viewed very fast by clicking on the username. This uses JavaScript so no page reload is required.

So posts look something like this:
[Image: http://newsboard.unclassified.de/img/v16/post1a.png]

And then like this:
[Image: http://newsboard.unclassified.de/img/v16/post1b.png]

There are no more <table> tags in this view used for the page layout, so it should be easy to edit. CSS classes are now divided into multiple files and rebuild completely. 1.5 CSS classes was just a mess, then I learned more about CSS2 and make use of its advantages. The downside of this may be that certain browsers won't be able to render everything as intended, but critical features can easily be disabled in this case.

I make screenshots with German language selected simply because the English translation does not exist yet. I'll do that in the end when I've finished with the new (also divided) translation file layout.

Hope you like the new design, more pictures to follow...

This is just great! And it looks very nice :)

This is something other boards are missing very hard. The new phpBB is becomming bigger and bigger in the layout, more and more buttons. While you (and you have a good solution for it) only need a few buttons. And maybe more, but then a click is not a problem to get them :)

Great work Yves!

Here's another one I finished recently. It shows a thread list page from the top logo to the first some threads. This includes the new navigation tabs that now work on any browser the same way (1.5 table tabs were nothing but a later added design hack).

[Image: http://newsboard.unclassified.de/img/v16/forum1.png]

I really hope Firefox' new release 1.5 will make it before UNB 1.6. I'm currently experiencing plenty of bugs in Firefox 1.0.6 relating to rendering accuracy (margins vary by 1 or 2 pixels, borders are omitted randomly, black borders appear while resizing the window) or the box model (showing or hiding of blocks produces huge margins or will partially hide the block underneath following text, the same can also lead to blank (white, black or background image) areas at the end of the page, reloading the page sometimes produces the same problem). Any bug I found was fixed in Firefox' nightly build. Opera 8 and IE 6 both displayed the page correctly in any case. So I really hope they're going to release the new version very soon... :-/

Looks great!! The layout design is exquisite. Can't wait for the final version to be release. My friend and me are planning to build a forum on our newly registered domain, and we're still in the middle of choosing the right forum software. Maybe we'll just wait for this version;)

Well, it's mostly what the roadmap on this website already says. No great surprises apart from that.

Smile, you'll be happy with translating 1.6. :) Many text keys can be used like this:
$UNB_T['posts'] = 'posts';
$UNB_T['posts.num1'] = 'post';
Of course you can define any numerus for a word, the real number of items will be used so $UNB_T['posts.num2'] and so on is also possible.
