Subject: UNB 1.6 released
(Deutsche Zusammenfassung folgt.)

Hello everybody!

Now the great time has come... well, actually today's stable version is nothing but the two days old development snapshot, but hey, finally it's officially called a "stable" release! :) I know you had to wait a bit longer than originally expected and again, I couldn't keep my own schedule. There have been some bug reports recently that I needed to handle first.

Many of you have been actively following UNB's development by using RC and bleeding-edge versions, helping me sort out some of the problems it had. For those, I have no real news today. All the other interested UNB admins of you will already have seen the 1.6 series in this support forum. The most significant changes to the 1.5 series is the new design, which comes with an HTML template engine. The core UNB's source code has been reorganised since then to be easier to maintain and to integrate in present web sites. The short URLs are implemented everywhere and the greatly improved plug-in system is configurable from the admin settings. Not mentioning all the other numerous changes...

So just get your free copy today and tell everybody else about it. As always, there's a full change log for each version. The website documentation is up-to-date with version 1.6 so if you have any questions or problems, please first try to find your answer there.

Enjoy the new Unclassified NewsBoard, I've put a lot of time and work into it to create a piece of software that "works for you". (You'll find the donation link right at the bottom of the homepage. :D)

Deutsche Zusammenfassung:

Just on time for Christmas. :) Admit it, the release candidates were only a ruse to delay it until X-Mas time :-D

Great work Yves, congratulation!

Another important note for upgraders from 1.5 to 1.6 using MySQL 4.1 or newer:

MySQL 4.1 or newer supports Unicode encodings and UNB 1.6 will use them. But present data is not converted so you need to disable the use of MySQL's Unicode capabilities. This isn't a tragic thing, it also works without as we have seen in UNB 1.5. All you need to do is set the configuration file option "db_utf8 = 0". You may find it in the file board.conf.php near the database account settings.

This doesn't apply to new installations or imported forums, only to upgrades from UNB versions before 2005-10-15, including 1.5.*.

I'll update the upgrade documentation accordingly today.
