Subject: Read me first before posting anywhere!
(This post applies to UNB version 1.5.x. In UNB 1.6 the path names are different. See the installation documentation for details.)

The most common question these days is something like:
"Help me, I cannot install the board, it says it can't write the configuration file."

Before you try posting this question, please CHMOD the following directories on your webspace to 0777 with your FTP programme:
  • the board's home directory
  • bb_log
  • bb_upload
  • rss_cache (if it exists)
Most problems should be gone then. This also helps with error messages like "Warning: fopen(bb_log/...): failed to open stream: Permission denied ..."

Another error message is:
"UNB Error: Cannot connect to database.
Access denied for user: '...@...' (Using password: YES)"

This has to do with that passwords are stored base64-encoded in the config file up to version 1.5. Please use version 1.5.1 or the latest development version instead or search for "base64" on this board.

If you ask one of these question and did not check the above points, don't wait to get an answer here.

"Why is my account on this support forum gone?"

I receive all mail delivery error messages from this board in my personal inbox. When I see that a user's e-mail address is invalid (permanent error) or the quota is exceeded (temporary error over some time) and I cannot reach this user on another way, I will remove that user's account with no warning if there are no posts by this user. Everyone has to care about the functionality of his mailbox. If removing that account is the only way to stop those error messages, I will do so. If the returned e-mail was the validation key, I will remove the new account immediately because the username would be locked and the user had no chance to re-register with that name.

"Why can't I edit my own posts anymore after a while?"

UNB supports a setting to limit the timespan in that users can edit their own posts. On this site, it is set to 30 minutes, so every user can edit their posts only for half an hour. Afterwards, only a moderator or administrator can edit these posts. Just in case you were wondering. The argumentation behind is that you cannot edit your posts forever, sometime you've just got to stand behind what you've said. (If you want to have this setting for your board, check the ACL editor, it's a selectable user action in there, assign it to the Members group.)

"I cannot go to subforums, it always takes me back to the overview page."

This is a configuration problem with some Apache servers. The problem only occurs together with short URLs in UNB and the Apache Option "MultiViews". It can also affect other pages being inaccessible. Please search this forum for "MultiViews" to find a solution. Future UNB versions (from now on) will have a note about that in the main .htaccess file.

We have a documentation. Yes, you wouldn't believe! It's not complete, but it covers the most often asked questions concerning installation, BBCodes, template customisation, files structure etc. It's very easy to find, but to get you straight there, here's the link again:

http://newsboard.unclassified.de/docs

Especially note the FAQ and Troubleshooting pages near the end of the contents listing.
