SEO optimized URLs

Hello,

UNB does a very great job when it comes to SEO. But there is still some space for optimizations.

URLs like http://mydomain.com/forum/post/10956 are not search firendly and cause double content.
The urls occur in some places, eg. on the header of each post where you can link to the post directly.

Is there a simple way to create a url instead which jumps to the SEO friendly Thread Url on the correct page and user an HTML anchor to navigate to the post?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi,

Gruss
Dj

We had a few cases where spammers used the "send email" function to spam registered forum members. As a quick fix I changed the function to give access to active members only (registered for more than 14 days, at least one post). This should keep most of the spammers out. At least for the messaging function.

Hi,

I want that users are not able to register to my unb. Instead, they should login with the username/password they already have in my game. When doing this for the first time, their user should be created for unb with default settings (but e-mail I already know) and they should be able to edit all settings as usual.

Looks like "session.prelogin" and "session.newuser" are made exactly for that! Though the documentation is really nearly non-existent. I have no idea on how it is intended to be used! (Tried around a bit but to no success)

Would anyone mind writing me a simple example plugin that accepts the login for user "joe", password "joe" and uses "session.newuser" to for example set its email address to "joe@example.com"

[Solved] Include a Javascript file within a plugin without a templatee

Hi,

I'm writing a plugin that creates a new ABBC tag. This tag needs javascript - a lot (jQuery & co). Currently, I was not able to include a javascript file from within my plugin. I tried with UnbRequireJs but it does not seem to do anything. Rather, when used in global-scope, it said that this function does not exist, but when used inside a function, it did not produce an error but did not include the js file either.

How to go about this? I don't want to hack around other files than my plugin's files but I need to have a javascript file included in any shown page.

Edit: I may insert the js code directly into my tag's php output, but that is harakiri as the js code includes jQuery, which contains a lot of ' and " things.....

Plugin for donations, user icons

I run a game community forum with unclassified newsboard, and i'm very happy with it (-> www.gausschannel.com)

To cover the expenses, i have added a donation button to the navigation (by directly adding the paypal javascript code to the _head.html page). Now, to polish this a bit, i have some questions.

Extending the navigation in the _head.html file seems unelegant, would there be a better way?

I would like to add a small icon before the name of users who have donated. To do this, i plan to do some things in the board:

I need to store additional user information (amount and date of donation) in the user table

In all places where the username is displayed, the donor icon should show up. Is this best done with a variable in the template file and a corresponding handler. Is there any information on how to do this? Ideal would be a way of extending the IUser class with a get method GetUserIcon(user id=0) or so, which would be called by a handler.

If you have any tipps or design-papers on how to implement this as a plugin without breaking the clean design of the newsboard, i would be grateful.

Working with Fonts

A while back I created an arcade font machine, and I put it to good use on my UNB forum, displaying usernames in glorious 8x8 pixel fonts. Recently, with the release of modern browsers like Opera 10 and Firefox 3.5, it became possible to use TTF/OTF/etc fonts in webpages. So I put those to good use also. Here is my guide to adding these features to your own UNB installation.

First, the pixel fonts:

Simply open /unb_lib/designs/modern/post.html and replace {$post.authorName} with <img src="http://yourserver.com/path-to-NFGscript/arcade.php/y-rf/z-3/dbl-2/x-{$post.authorName}" />

Next, custom truetype fonts, using CSS:

Just add the following to your user.css.php file:

@font-face {
  font-family: Border;
  src: url(/path-to/fonts/borderheaven.otf);
}

.post_username {
    font-family: Border, Arial, sans-serif;
    font-size: 16px;
    color: red;
    }
Finally, remember that if your users are stuck with an older, crappier browser, all they'll see is this:

(actually the pixel fonts should work fine, though without the PNG transparency, and the CSS fonts will simply be ignored).

Name: YOUR NAME
E-Mail: WHERE I CAN SEND THE THEME/CONTACT NEXT PERSON IN LINE
Website URL: YOUR SITE URL
Colors: COLORS YOU WISH TO BE USED
Images: IMAGES YOU WISH TO BE USED
Example: EXAMPLE OF THEME YOU WISH YOUR BOARD TO LOOK LIKE EXAMPLES CAN BE FROM (PHPBB3, SMF, ECT)
Style Theme: STYLE THEME (Gaming, Anime, Manga, Club's, Programming, Personal, Cooking, Ect)
Licenced To: YOUR COMPANY, ORGANIZATION, GROUP NAME (Name .Ltd, You Tube, Google.com)

That about all I need from you posted right here. Please note I will take on "ONE" project at a time so you might have to wait sry.... I will contact the next person in line via e-mail. Also each theme will include a something like this
"Designed By: Miku of SEEDesign .Ltd" ...... Now the most important part... I only accept "ONE" request per person....
Also each theme will take about 1-2 Weeks to finish... since I have little time to work from day to day but I will try my best to finish ASAP ^^

UNB as a CMS

While setting up a new site I thought it might be a good idea to have front page updates controlled by UNB. Now I can make forum posts, and all the content appears on the front page of the site, as if by magic! It means I now have one system for forum + CMS, instead of two.

If you'd like to pull posts from UNB and put them on your site, here's a guide to doing it. The following information does four things:

Set up database access

This function does both jobs:

cuts the post length

replaces the UBCode

(I did not write either function)

/* First, truncate the string. */
/* Accepts 2 criteria: the string itself and the character limit */
function myTruncate($string, $limit, $break="\n")
    // return with no change if string is shorter than $limit
    if(strlen($string) <= $limit) return $string;

    // is $break present between $limit and the end of the string?
    if(false !== ($breakpoint = strpos($string, $break, $limit))) {
      if($breakpoint < strlen($string) - 1) {
        $string = substr($string, 0, $breakpoint);
      }
    }

/* Next, replace BBCode with HTML */
  $bbcode = array("<", ">",
            // echo "";
            if($content) {
    //    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISPLAY CONTENT
                echo "<div class=\"content\">";
                $body = myTruncate($post['Msg'], 75);
                echo $body;
                echo "</div>";
            }
    //    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISPLAY CONTENT END
            echo "</div>";
    //    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISPLAY TITLE END
    }
    // echo "";
}
    //    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BLOCK END

Now, it's probably not nearly as nice as Yves' code, but it works. Putting all the HTML code in the PHP echo blocks is cumbersome and ugly, but... Well, I suck. It's all I can do. By using CSS you can change the appearance of the posts depending on where they are in the page.

The HTML Page 1

Finally, the page itself. This is a very short example. Your page design should look like this:

HTML START

PHP Functions (listed above)

Connect to the DB (below)

Some HTML/CSS/Whatever.

HTML END

You can use the GETPOSTS function anywhere you want to display your posts

// First, connect to the DB. This should be one of the first things in your page:
<?
$db = mysql_connect($dbhost, $dbuser, $dbpass);
mysql_select_db($dbname);
?>

The HTML Page 2

Finally, here's an example of the HTML & PHP used to display the post(s). It pulls 12 posts from forum 31, with no content:

<div class="news">
    <?
    echo getposts(31, 12, 0);
    ?>
</div>

Some extra thoughts:

This code is as secure as any other PHP file on your server. Normally people won't be able to view your passwords and such if they're in a PHP file, but if your server's insecure this file is going to give away your passwords.

This code does not use any UNB facilities, it's a raw assault on the database. Since it's read-only there's no chance of messing up your data, but it doesn't obey UNB's user access rules or anything, so it's easy to rip out private posts etc.

I don't write good code. This is all probably dangerous and will cause your server to catch fire. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Useful ABBC add-ons

I've been adding features to my forum and thought maybe other people would be interested in my solutions. To add any of these to your own forum, simply copy the code into your abbctags.php file (in unb_lib/plugins)

Youtube videos
Some users wanted to see inline youtube videos, so I created an ABBC tag called [toob]. The code is:

    $ABBC['Tags']['toob'] = array(
     'htmlopen0'  => '<center><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/$1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com.au/v/$1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>',
     'htmlcont0'  => '',
     'htmlclose0' => '</center>',
     'textcont0'  => 'http://www.youtube.com/v/$1',
     'htmlblock'  => true,
     'minparam'   => 0,
     'maxparam'   => 0,
     'openclose'  => true,
     'nocase'     => true,
     'nested'     => false,
     'proccont'   => true,
     'subset'     => ABBC_CUSTOM
);
Note that it requires the user enclose only the video ID, not the entire video URL. For example, [toob]Qr4S-43ss2![/toob] This is so I didn't have to add any logic to prevent them from linking any evil flash files.

Integration with DokuWiki

I have just completed integration of UNB with DokuWiki. Well, mostly: DokuWiki now checks UNB's user list and passwords to verify wiki user permissions. It does not support the rest of DokuWiki's user-edit functionality, which is optional: just remember to edit them in UNB instead!

Note also that I had to revert UNB to MD5 hashing for passwords, which means all your UNB users will have to create new passwords. The alternative is putting Yves' KMD5 code into DokuWiki, but such a job is beyond me.

DokuWiki MySQL Auth Setup

Plugin development.

Alrighty, so I'm helping my friend out by writing a "post as anonymous" plugin, as per this thread. So, what I've got so far, is the config page, saving the settings, and adding the required fields and tables. Here's how I have it planned to work..

'anon' field added to posts, to flag a post as anonymous.
'anonypost' table added: id, threadid, userid, anonymous name
Two setting added: basename for the anonymous name, and the avatar to use for them

1. User opens the Post Options below the post, and checks off "Post Anonymously".
2. Plugin sees this, and sets the added "anon" field in the posts table to 1, for this post.
3. When the post is being parsed, in the post.preparse phase, it checks for the anon flag. If it's found..
4. Look in the "anonypost" table for this thread to see if this user has posted in this thread already. example: select name from anonypost where ((threadid = thisthread) and (userid = thisuser)). if a name's returned, use it. Otherwise, pull all the anonymous names (select name from anonypost where threadid=thisthread), trim them to just the number, get the max, and increment it.
5. Use the "anonymous name" instead of their real one. Use an anonymous-specific avatar. Remove the signature and other information.
6. If an admin is looking at the post, show the post normally, but add "this was posted anonymously" to the end of the message.

Now, I've got some of this done, but the API and Hooks are kicking my butt.
I'm stalled at step 2 - I can add the option to the Post Options section, but there seems to be no way to read that! post.preparse doesn't do it. post.postthreadcreate doesn't do it.

edit: okay, got it. Have to check $_POST array in post.verifyaccept.

Also, one potential issue I see is with quoting - is there a "prequote" hook?

I'm trying to write this as an actual plugin, rather than just hack the code into shape.

Also:
- Beitrag etc.
Kategorie 2

<header>
<announcemet box>
<footer>

angezeigt bekommen.

Danke einstweilen

Mit Gruß

Oliver

Access API with fixed user (instead of deriving the user from the session)

How do I access the UNB API as if by coming from a fixed user id, bypassing the session/cookie stuff that normally happens?

I am trying to integrate UNB with a newspaper website, where I would like a forum thread for each news article.

The newspaper website shows an article with a PHP script, so I augmented that script to invoke UNB API functions to find the right forum and the right thread within that forum and to output a link to that thread beneath the article. I also added code to auto-create the forum threads (using IThread.Add and IPost.Add, mostly).

So far, so good. But now it turns out that the new thread and post are added using the credentials of the user sitting in front of the browser (if that user has logged into UNB yet). But that's not what I want. I want these auto-created threads and posts to be always from the same user.

But the human sitting in front of the browser should still be allowed to click on a link to the thread, and be authenticated with their own credentials or by their own browser session. This way, replies added by that person would come from them.

I started reading through the stuff that comes after the session.prelogin hook in common.lib.php, but it made my head swim.

Thanks,
Kai

Hi,

is it possible to let unb show usernames of the posts only to logged in people? Guests and bots shall only see a "***" or whatever instead of the username.

Thx
Greg

Besides: I'm sure, it's possible. What i really mean is "how".

Hi,
I am not sure if I can implement what i want with easy. I want to have a common login to the forum and site. Well i got the idea for that from other posts. Well my next requirement is to remove the top banner, the tabs and also the login fields. I just need the forum (I am not planning to change the looks. It is simple and simply awesome ). Not only that I would like to have an admin interface for the forum from an admin panel I have created for the site. Is these things possible? I hope I will get a reply to this post soon. Thanks.

Hall erstmal!

Sharing user data with CMS portal

Greetings,
I mistakenly posted a similar question in the general help section <apologies>.
So now that I've since done a bit more investigation and made some attempts. I've finally come down to this:
After evaluating 160+ CMS/portal/et al; I've decided for my needs, the perfect forum is UNB, and I've settled
for CMSMS as a CMS/portal.
I have a CMS already installed (CMS made simple). I - of course have UNB installed also. My site arrangement is thus:
CMS == root of web site
UNB === the folder /unb/ just off of the root of the web site eg;
http://domain.tld == CMS
http://domain.tld/unb/ == UNB forum

OK, so now that I have them both installed. I don't want for users to have to register 2 times (1 for CMS, 2 for forum).
So, I realize I have two things I need to deal with in order to overcome this:
1) USER information stored in the DB (and also in the session - see: 2 below).
2) Session information

I've done a bit of searching in the forums here, as well as read some of the DEV related documentation (thanks Yves).
I have also studied the code base (thanks again Yves for so many code comments). My searching has revealed 3 things:
1) This is a popular topic
2) Many questions, but if anyone has finished their attempt to accomplish this, they have not shared the results.
3) The following juicy tidbits related to this sort of thing:
http://newsboard.unclassified.de/forum/thread/1095
http://newsboard.unclassified.de/forum/thread/1027
http://newsboard.unclassified.de/forum/thread/1020
http://newsboard.unclassified.de/coderef/20051116/function…

So, I guess, as much as I would love someone to do all of this for me. I realize that would be selfish, and unrealistic.
What I do hope for, is a shorter learning curve in accomplishing this task. So any information, code snippets,
pointers, etc will be extremely welcome.
Here is what I must contend with (see install.tar.gz attached to this post). As noted earlier, I have looked hard at both
code bases, but as yet have accomplished no more than become lost. Is it hard to share the session data? It's
located in /unb/unb_lib/session.lib.php (for UNB) correct? It appears that I have the option of kerb, sha, crypt, and plain
text. Correct? Given the install (attached) will it be a problem to share tables. I currently have CMSMS and UNB using the
same DB (mysql) and UNB uses a unb_ prefix. Whereas CMSMS uses no prefix. At this point, I am mostly interested
in just each install knowing the users that are already registered, and sharing newly registered users data as well.
This doesn't seem like it would be difficult. But it is just a little out of my reach (knowledge).

Thank you in advance for all your time and consideration!

P.S. If this gets accomplished. I will most certainly post it here. So others will have their prayers answered.

New tag - spoiler

I tried to create new tag called 'spoiler' because on my forum, we often wrote about films and games and their plots. But it's not the best idea to show something that someone shouldn't see before see it himself. I know that we can use something like this:

SPOILER - lookout!
This is text that you should not read.
The end of SPOILER

But this is not the best solution as you can read it involuntary...So I'd like to have this tag, that should look like this:

[spoiler]This is text that you should not read.[/spoiler]

And it should be converted to div with display: none and instead of it user should see link with some text like Click here to reveal great mysteries. Clicking it should change display: none to display: block with JS.

So where's the problem?
I have no idea how to add some variable to this tag to make it independent from others on page and in same post (id). It's needed for identification different divs so JS could be used. First I thought that I could use $postid or something but if someone will use more then one spoiler in post it will generate errors.
Could someone help me with this? If there is some better way to deal with this problem then I don't mind to use it.

[ot]Oh and Yves...Happy Birthday! [/ot]

Hello there,

We have started to use UNB for our websites and we need a plugin that makes the links or some part of content unavailable for visitors.

Is there a way to to this? Or does this require a plug in?

Thanks for your help by now...

Ankündigungen im RSS-Feed

Hallo,
