User registration: .NET passport auto-registration/authentication

some kind of .NET passport auto-registration/authentication?
Users wouldn't need to register with each board but only with one central instance (like MS passport?) and the board can retrieve user information from that instance when the user wants to log in with his <passport> userid and password. The board would create a 'local' userid and profile with an auto-generated username, if the default one is already taken away
Note: this is only an idea, no concrete implementation intent.
Alternative technologies: OpenID http://openid.net
